Season of Lent
Lent is the 40 days (plus Sundays) between Ash Wednesday and Easter. During this season we reflect upon our personal sin (and humanity’s collective sin) that led to Christ being crucified on the cross to save us from that sin.
During this season we practice additional spiritual disciplines (such as of worship, prayer, and study of scripture), and we give additional alms to help those in need.
Laetare Sunday
The 4th Sunday in Lent is “Laetare Sunday”, which means to “rejoice.” It is the Sunday near the middle of Lent, to remind us, in the midst of our season of penance and fasting, to have the joy of Christ within us, and that our hearts will rejoice in the resurrection, as we persist in our Lenten journey for just a few more weeks. This Sunday is also often a break in the Lenten fast. The liturgical color of the day is rose or pink, which is the color symbolizing joy within the Christian church.
