Advent
The season of Advent is the anticipation of the three fold coming of Christ: (1) the first coming at his birth, as we prepare for the celebration of Christmas; (2) the second coming, when Christ returns to earth or when we return to God’s Heavenly Kingdom; and (3) the coming of Christ into our lives each day, and how are we prepared to encounter and welcome him in our every day life and every day encounters with others.
Each Sunday during Advent we light a candle representing: hope, peace, joy, and love of the Advent Season, all of which culminate on Christmas when we light the Christ candle (light), for Christ makes all these gifts of hope, peace, joy, love, and light in our life possible.
The colors of the Advent Season:
Blue is the liturgical color for “hope”; rose (pink) is the color for “joy”; and purple is the color of “penance, preparation, and sacrifice” and the color of “royalty”, as during this season we prayerfully reflect upon why we needed and continue to need Christ our Saviour to come to save us from sin, the sacrifice that was made by Christ our King for us, and how we are to repent and live changed lives in response to his loving grace.
Gaudete Sunday
The third Sunday of Advent is Gaudete Sunday, which means to “rejoice,” as we rejoice in the Good News of the anticipated coming of Jesus Christ. We light a rose or pink colored candle this morning, the color for “joy.” For those fasting during the season of Advent, Gaudete Sunday is a break in the Advent fast.
Children & Youth Christmas Program
The third Sunday of Advent is also our traditional day for our Sunday school children and youth to lead us in worshiping God through our annual Christmas program. We hope you will join us that day in support and celebration of our youth and in the worship of our Lord God.
